Historical records of ore mining in the Ore Mountains begin in 1168, when silver ores were discovered in the vicinity of today's Freiberg. More than 800 years of mining history of the Ore Mountains are based on this discovery.

Still carrying water to this day and largely preserved in its original form, the Grüner Graben water ditch in Pobershau is an example of the water management systems found in the Marienberg Mining Area. Constructed in the second half of the 17th century, the Grüner Graben water ditch extends over a length of 8 km. The water delivered by the ditch was utilised in the mines and for driving the water-powered machines in ten tin stamp mills and ore washers in Pobershau. From the 19th century its water was used for the emerging industry in Pobershau.
